lost lands, lost maps

Post by Elthir on Wed Jun 11, 2014 2:02 pm

From the introduction to Tolkien's Beowulf, footnote two to page two.

'Following B(i) and B(ii) is a further typescript (extant also in carbon copy) which I made, and which can be dated to about 1940-2.*

*At that time I did various 'amanuensis' tasks to assist my father: recently I came upon a forgotton map of The Silmarillion, very carefully drawn and coloured, signed with my initials and the date 1940, though I have no recollection now of its making. Other indications suggest 1942: see the Notes on the Text of the translation, pp. 126-7, note lines 2260-2.'

 Shocked

Sorry if we already have a general thread about the maps and lands though.

Especially sorry if I'm the one who already made a general thread about maps and lands  Suspect

I have my copy and was put out by the lack of maps. All Tolkien books should come with maps. No matter if the map in question doesn't actually belong with the book in question. I hope Christopher publishes it soon.

More maps the better!

I like maps, gives weight to the story, makes it more real. I can follow the maps in time with reading & I feel Im a part of things.
