When I was five or six I was utterly obsessed with lemurs. We made a big trip to the zoo in Philadephia to see some real live ones, and I brought my collection of stuffed lemurs along. My mom just posted this picture and story on FB and it brought back some fun memories. Smile

The day we almost got kicked out of the Philadelphia Zoo

Lemurs assert their dominance by rubbing their tail underneath their armpit (where their scent glands are) and then waving their tail over their head. The Philly Zoo has a barrier free lemur exhibit, which we went to see. *Someone* thought it would be interesting to see the real lemur's reaction to a stuffed lemur. Party pooper zoo workers weren't amused, as lemur spray is apparently very similar to skunk spray.

"barrier free lemur exhibit"

Sounds cool! Very Happy

Maybe after your visit the sentence should say, "The Philly Zoo had a barrier free lemur exhibit."

Laughing  Actually, I have no idea if the Philly Zoo still has that same exhibit.  I don't think I've been back since then, since both the Baltimore and DC Zoos are closer.

It was a really great exhibit, though.  The lemurs were on this island that was half-covered by a building (which included lemur rooms/viewing areas) but was half open air, trees and stuff, with a little patio for guests to stand on.  The island was in a decent-sized artificial lake, which discouraged he lemurs from trying to escape, since they don't like water.  The only bridge onto the island entered directly into the building, which you had to walk through (with multiple sets of doors) to get to the open part.  But once you were there, the lemurs could and did come right up to you.

Yeah, it was really neat. Smile

Speaking of lemurs, though, I just saw on Facebook that the initial reason for my infatuation with them -- Zoboomafoo, the sifaka lemur co-host of the TV show of the same name -- has passed away at his home at Duke University. Clearly he had a great long life, but still. Sad

Fun fact: The Philadelphia Zoo prohibits feeding Buckie directly the lemurs, or putting little kilts on them.

Then what's the point of even having a lemur?
