The wind is so icy you nearly wet yourself stepping out, & no matter how near the corner shop is its not near enough. Its very slippery as well. Any fluids on the path turned to ice instantly. The sky is an impenetrable blanket of white & more white. There is no bird song, there is an eerie quietness & stillness, almost as tho you are the last survivor. Its not a fun, friendly snow, its an evil snow, with a hidden agenda.

We had a few light flurries of sleet and snow around midday, but nothing to compare to yesterday (ironically the snowflakes yesterday whilst small were very constant and kinda powdery, today they were much bigger but there's more moisture around and patches are starting to defrost already) we've actually had lots of rain showers on and off for most of the evening, will be interesting to see how much ice is around tomorrow (I did make tentative plans to meet a mate at the pub tomorrow for a few drinks...not entirely sure walking 4.5 miles to town (and then back again) is a good idea in these conditions. Yeah, it's been pretty damn cold down here as well (you live in Essex right? I'm down in Hampshire near Fareham), surprisingly there was lots of Robins around in the woods earlier and I kept trying to get a good pic, but the skittish buggers kept flying off before my camera would focus or zoom, there were also what seemed to be a few fox/badger tracks around as well, it's weird snow too, oddly powdery and crunchy on top not the best for snowmen or snowball fights (though I'm probably too old for that anyway...though I've challenged my girlfriend to a snowball fight if any remains when we meet up on sunday).

How much snow counts as "a lot" is an entirely relative measure based on local climate and infrastructure/preparedness. Three to four inches is significant for any area that only sees that level of snowfall once every few years.

I think it looks prettier in the snow lol, haven't wondered round those woods in maybe a year or two, shame they cut half it down for a business park (when I was a kid there was a huge pond there which froze over in snowy weather and would have made for a great photo) all the dogs on walks seemed to like it.

We haven't got proper snow in maybe three or four years down here, and nothing of this severity for nearly 8, it's alot for England, especially the costal regions, public transport has been completely cancelled and almost everyone I no is off work (it said on the news some poor buggers in The New Forest were stranded overnight on a train for 18 hours coz the line was too blocked) some of the main roads were gritted or thawed quite quickly but there's very few gritbins or support from the local authorities in such weather, hopefully it will thaw soon.

And thanks for the nice comments about our dog (Penny, a rescue dog Dachshund/Jack Russell crossbreed, had her since she was 9 months and she is 13 (I think) in July, she's a sweetheart when she wants to be but also a bit of a cheeky lazy grump in her old age and she loves her food, she seemed very unimpressed with the cold weather.

I went back and edited my comment once I had a realization that I'm embarrassed to say should have struck 4 decades ago:

Edit: okay I take that back. An "island" 8 degrees of latitude is like the difference between New York and Charleston, South Carolina. Funny, I never thought of England as being that big. Shocked

The snow has almost entirely melted away today (much warmer and we had rain earlier) but here's a few more photos I took earlier in the woods about 10-11am this morning, looks a lot nicer in the snow:

Loads of squirrels and robins out enjoying the wintry weather, but none of the buggers stayed still long enough for me to get a decent pic...

I heard it was bad where you are Petty. We had snow in the South East & it was cold enough to make a snowman swear but, we didn't get it as bad as others did. Its all gone & cleared away now. The grass is lush & green tho my sprouting Spring bulbs are knackered, which is a shame as I was SO looking forward to the Daffodils & tulips !
