First review of Valerian I've seen is mixed: looks great, acting and writing is lackluster.

http://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/movies/2017/07/20/valerian-city-thousand-planets-movie-review/103844300/

I'm not surprised the reviewer didn't think much of the actor playing Valerian. My sense of him from the previews is that he's a Benicio Del Toro type in too young a body to carry off his gritty gravitas. He needs some lines in his face before he'll feel right in his own skin. Plus the idea of hot young kids with super skills is way over done. James Bond would have been silly played by a 19 year old.

Yep, it looks good. All these CGI films look good, they can obviously be whatever you want them to be. Ive got an itch for a good old fashioned 'people' film. Like some of the good B/W films or films from the 50's. They had a story, grit & guts, more passion. I got more involved, more interested in the characters. I cant feel for a CGI. no matter how lifelike it is. ( unless its an animal then I'L blub my eyes out ) Most times I couldn't give a shit who died, don't even blink but, in the 'Golden Oldies' it was upsetting if someone you got engrossed in was killed. You felt it like you would an aunt or uncle. You rooted for the good guy & smiled when it all came good. I cant even twitch at one now. I'm either getting to complicated & cold or maybe desensitized ?

I kind of want to see this just for the number of A-list actors playing outside their typecasting.

Wasn't sold on that first teaser, but this is looking much better now. Franco does a spot on imitation of Wiseau.

I wonder if it will deal with the replicant theme as poetically as Blade Runner?

Re: Future releases [2]

Blade Runner 2049 has got fantastic reviews, and the pairing of Director Denis Villeneuve (who directed Prisoners, Scicario and Arrival, all of which got critical acclaim-only seen the first but it was excellent, if rather harrowing...) with cinematographer Roger Deakins (Skyfall, True Grit, No Country For Old Men, The Shawshank Redemption, The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford etc...how has he not won an oscar yet?) means that it will no doubt look visually stunning...but I'm still dubious if this will this actually find an audience and rather nervous that it will actually live up to or complement the original on a thematic level.

I remain surprised the studios stumped up $185 million for a 35 year later sequel to a cult classic-Blade Runner is a classic of the genre and one of my favourite films, but it wasn't a financial hit and continues to divide audiences- it's a action light noir with a very simple plot and thinly sketched characters, more of a thematic mood piece and visual spectacle than story driven blockbuster, curious how much of a compromise the writer/directors had to make with the studios, the trailers for 2049 put a focus on the action and scale, which is understandable given the cost, but I've also read the storyline is more complex and builds off the beats of the original film.

Probably going to see it on friday, fingers crossed it's good (well, all the reviews are saying it's good, I'm just hoping I like it, was quite content with the original film, but since they've made a sequel might as well try and enjoy it...)

I read that Bladerunner 2 is visually stunning but the story is dull.
