The Bakshi version is also quite a bit darker and more troubled than PJs version, and much more irritable and crabbit- which obviously I like.
Good as Mckellan is, his Gandalf is a bit too much the firendly, twinkly eyed wizard for my tastes.

Heheh... well I'm just going by the 'look' to date, and my subjective subjectivity.

By the way, Saruman at 6 feet (conversion to meters not included) 7 inches? Wow. And Hmm.

I''d always pictured Saruman tall, but not quite that tall!
He should have challenged Gandalf to one on one basketball instead of that stupid stick fight PJ gave them.

There was a link back in Bree to some news from the set.
One of the things it said was that Thorin is 5 foot 2 inches tall.

I don't like the direction they're taking Thorin's character. It screams ,"bad ass," and that's not the vibe I got from the book at all.

At least the height effects in the Hobbit were good.

reaching new heights
by Elthir on Mon Sep 26, 2011 3:57 pm..

your facts and figures feel right to my memory and sensibilities.

but this strikes me odd: Eldarin men: no less than 6 foot 6, and taller for some kings and leaders (noted by JRRT in reaction to an illustration)
is JRR s reaction what this is based on?

I remember Celeborn as being referred to in Unfinished tales, I think, as being very tall as well.
I looked it up
pg 279 unfinished tales , the name Celeborn was derived from orna"uprising, tall" rather from noun orne "tree".... That Celeborn was tall is mentioned in note of Numenorean linear measures p.299 -remarks of Celeborn .one of the Teleri ...he was held by them to be tall, as his name indicated, (silver tall) but the Teleri were in general somewhat less in build and stature than the noldor.

so I suppose that is nebulous, maybe he is just "tall" for the shorter Teleri. It isn't clear here. so you may have other more clear sources.

Just trying to help. Thanks for your research.

Generally speaking, meaning that Tolkien reacted to an illustration by Pauline Baynes and started writing descriptions. Legolas was the only Elf in the illustration in question, but once Tolkien got rolling he seems to have written about Eldarin men in general.

I too take Celeborn to be tall for a Teler, and if memory serves these late statements about Celeborn being tall are really within the context of him being a Teler from Aman, not a Sinda of Middle-earth, as published.

And thanks!
