Sam is way better than Frodo

Post by TheUberNerdyKid on Mon Dec 31, 2012 6:00 pm

I just watched the trilogy of films in the past 2 days, and there is something I've noticed. Sam is WAY more useful than Frodo. Even though Frodo turns on Sam and yells at him, Sam still follows and saves him from danger. Even before that, Sam carries all the stuff, and rations all of the food, and knows Smeagol's real motives. He also rescues Frodo from the giant Spider, and from the Orc tower, killing 2 of them by himself even being undernourished and dehydrated. He even carries Frodo up to Mount Doom, doing so when both of them have had no food or water, and sweating like pigs because of the heat.
It's like Sam is the real hero, and Frodo is just holding the ring for him! What does Frodo even do in the films that's good? He didn't even willingly throw the ring into Mount Doom!! And he gets a ride to the Undying Lands? P'shaw!
Is this at all different in the books? And, do you disagree with what I have said?

Frodo just falls a lot and said yes to carrying the ring. He also does little else than to offer it to everyone he meets (except Faramir). When I read the books, it was always Sam who was the main character of those two, it was always through his eyes we saw things. Sam is truly the real hero, the one who stays positive and motivated. Frodo is just a depressive, attention whore... Also, why is Gandalf always like "oh frodo" "frodo, is he alive" "FRODO. no ur dead, man" but never, no one ever mentiones sam. Like he actually did what gandalf told him to, not leave frodo.

He took it upon himself to carry the ring Wink It's been a while since I read the Lord of the Rings, but Frodo as I remember him from the books is way more competent than he is in the films.

There are all sorts of differences between book and film in the releationship between Frodo and Sam, some major some minor- Frodo never picks Gollum over Sam or sends him way in the books- Sam doesnt fight his way up the tower, they enter and face Shelob together ect
And Ringdrotten is right- book Frodo is both a lot brighter and a lot moe proactive in the books than films.

However Sam is the hero in both book and film. Tolkien said in Letters he always felt Sam was the main hero of the piece. And he gets the happy ending- wife, family, Bag End, Mayor- not bad for a simple gardener.

yepp, frodo is different and more likable (except his face) in the book, but Sam is definitely the hero.

yup Sam is the hero, he could have left Frodo at any time, only true friendship keeps him by Frodo's side.

I think the inspiration for Sam was Tolkien's days in WWI. The courage of the Everyman facing overwhelming odds but continuing anyways.
He really is the hero of the story.

Sam is the loyal, sometimes playful (in words at least) dog with Frodo as the master. This may sound bad at first reading, but dogs are usually much more entertaining with more redeeming qualities than their masters. Give me a choice between spending time with a dog or their master and I'll go for the dog 90% of the time. I don't consider this comparison an insult to Sam at all, and those who really know their appendix lore will know from my screen name what my opinion of Sam must be.

It really shows how well Lord of the Rings is written that the protagonist and the hero can be two different characters and can share so many duties without their roles becoming too confused.

Not to mention Frodo couldn't ever do anything for himself in the first film either. He was always whining or screaming for someone to help him

I'm not sure I agree.
If it were not for Sam's interactions over his life, mainly with Bilbo, and to a lesser extent Frodo, he would have been just aother small minded, parochial hobbit.
I think there is a lot less between a hobbit like Sam and one like Sandyman than one might at first think.
Tolkien has an interesting releatonship with the inhabitants of places like 'The Shire' and real world equivelents he knew in his youth- he goes between admiration and understanding to in Letters, something quite close to a hostile attitude towards them for their close mindedness and this extends to Sam.

Sam grows from follower to leader: most of his leadership occurs after the book ends as he keeps being elected mayor. He takes over only when Frodo is incapacitated. It's unclear whether he would have accepted the task of ring bearer.

Frodo is a reluctant leader, but among the hobbits nearly always a leader nontheless; even if they largely move past his pacifist tendencies in the scouring of the shire he takes the lead in the treatment of Saruman in a way Sam wasn't yet able to do. Frodo tends towards wisdom rather than action - as Faramir points out when Sam interrupts his 'trial' in Ithilien.

But action is always the best course of action! Never wisdom! Rolling Eyes
