{{{{So, the second trailer for Star trek Beyond is out- and amazingly I don't hate it- especially after he first one which left, many, myself included thinking- 'That's supposed to be Star Trek?'
So what's different here?- well there's ST stuff here! Mccoy giving Kirk actual advice, Scotty doesn't just seem to be a badly written comic character and Spock isn't being emotional all the time whilst claiming not to be. Yes there are still far to many explosions and implosions, the villains look pretty generic villain and there is no hint about it of anything deeper than explosions and fun, so it will probably be as shit as the first two- but I've gone form 100% sure of this to about 96% sure of this.
Also didn't know Simon Pegg wrote this one, and that gives me a small spark of hope too.

Anyhow here you go, trailer-

And in real ST news- ST Continues have a new episode out at the end of the week, 'Come Not Between Dragons' (they even have proper sounding ST episode names!)which will include their new replica set of Scotty's engine room the managed to build after extra crowd funding. Cant wait, right now ST:Continues is the only proper new ST out there. Heres a link to their site where you can watch previous episodes, and a trailer for the new episode}}

The characters, especially Kirk, weren't quite right in the Abrams films.

Wasn't there some sciency excuse in the 2009 film that this was a separate timeline that had been altered? (i.e a ready made excuse to muck around with the characters).

(I did like Wrath Of Khan very much and enjoyed Next Generation, but never cared very much for the bits and pieces I've seen of the original run)

{{{yeah the reboot film stake place in an alternate universe that makes no sense. There are more plot holes in the first two films than there is plot. Also they cocked up the very simple, but hugely effective central premise of the original characters- Kirk is the action lead form the front Captain and he is balanced by McCoy who is his concious, his passion, his humanity, and Spock who is his cold, calculating, logical side. Together they form the emotional, psychological tripod on which everything else hangs.
The new films tried to stick Uhura into that tripod relationship in some sort of PC better make the black woman more important thing that only succeeded in undermining the central characters and making Kirk dull as ditch water as a result, Spock a hormonal teenager and McCoy just sort of there.

When it comes to the original series- I would highly recommend Doomsday Machine (a personal favourite), Balance of Terror (a sort of of space WW2 stealth submarine film) Mirror, Mirror (dont watch first! Get at least a couple of normal episodes under your belt first) The Devil in the Dark, Amok Time and Trouble with Tribbles (for some light fun) . }}}

{{{I have mixed feelings- more I hear less crabbit I am getting- main worry is bloke that wrote the ST reboot shitfest is onboard- but as I said before ther eis hope he is doing this to make amends Suspect but n more hopeful news they also have Nicolas Meyers onboard who did Star Trek  Wrath of Khan and St VI The Undiscovered Country, notable both for two things- they are two of the best Trek films, and they are both about stuff, Khan about ageing and loss and rediscovering how to go on, and VI is a parallel to the end of the Cold War.
They also have one of the main writers from DS9 on board too. So hopes for less explosions, less lens flare, less hi-octane spectacle, a bit more ST depth and politics.
The rumour mill, going on the involvement of Meyers and the teaser trailer showing a partly exploded planet or moon, suggests its possible set a short time after the events of VI and the beginning of the peace deal with the Klingons and its rocky beginnings following the destruction of Praxis the Klingon moon in VI.
Its also rumoured that it will ether change to a different crew every season, or alternate between different crews, human and non-human. Apparently this is a bit of a GoT influence in that would allow them to kill off folk and you would never be sure who was safe. What with the lazy writers equivalent to Russian roulette making up for drama these days.}}}

{{{Well iot been a shit tie of late of your a St fan.
First fan stuff like ST Continues above- kiss em goodbye.
CBS has released a set of rules for the making of fan films which pretty much target and take down every good fan ST series out there and every ST fan film in one fell swoop. Here are some of the worst bits}}}-

The fan production must be less than 15 minutes for a single self-contained story, or no more than 2 segments, episodes or parts, not to exceed 30 minutes total, with no additional seasons, episodes, parts, sequels or remakes.

The title of the fan production or any parts cannot include the name “Star Trek.”

If the fan production uses commercially-available Star Trek uniforms, accessories, toys and props, these items must be official merchandise and not bootleg items or imitations of such commercially available products.

CBS and Paramount Pictures do not object to limited fundraising for the creation of a fan production, whether 1 or 2 segments and consistent with these guidelines, so long as the total amount does not exceed $50,000, including all platform fees, and when the $50,000 goal is reached, all fundraising must cease.

The fan production must be a real “fan” production, i.e., creators, actors and all other participants must be amateurs, cannot be compensated for their services, and cannot be currently or previously employed on any Star Trek series, films, production of DVDs or with any of CBS or Paramount Pictures’ licensees.

{{{So thats just about every St fan film, every St fan series all destroyed in an instant. Not to mention all the ST fans who piled their own cash into crowd-funding projects such as Axanar or St:Continues that have now lost their investments- way to keep fans on side already sick of the explosions and non-story, non-character films of the reboot.

Talking of which to round things off, any hope having Pegg pen this new St reboot would mean a bit more brains and a lot less shit just exploding because it looks cool- sadly not it seems if this comment from Chris Pine is anything to go by-

“You can’t make a cerebral Star Trek in 2016. It just wouldn’t work in today’s marketplace. You can hide things in there – Star Trek Into Darkness has crazy, really demanding questions and themes, but you have to hide it under the guise of wham-bam explosions and planets blowing up."

Yes you fucking can- you lot cant because you haven't the first arsing clue what St is, how to write a character based narrative, or how to structure a sci-fi film around its themes. Its not that it cant be done, its that its easier, lazier and more profitable just to blow shit up and fill the screen with action and cgi continuously.

Fuck this- I think I am sadly done with Star Trek. They have killed Rodenberry's vision stone cold dead.}}}

Does 9/11 Trutherism count as "crazy, really demanding questions and themes" in Chris Pine's book? Shrugging

Idris Elba's villain was very thinly sketched, the plot is very simple, and some of the supporting crew had little to do, but it did feel a little more Trekky to me than Abrams two films, the Bones/Spock/Kirk friendship was handled quite well, there's some very funny one liners and the camerwork/cgi was impressive as always, it's a solidly entertaining summer blockbuster that I'm inclined to think you'll find slighty less annoying than the previous two, but nothing too memorable i.m.o.

But don't worry, the co-writer-producer of Into Darkness is heavily involved in the new TV series Cool

{{Well good to hear the Kirk/McCoy/Spock relationship dynamic is getting more emphasis- it the whole point of Kirk as the central character- Spock his rational, reasoning conscious, and McCoy his emotional, passionate one- Kirk being in the middle between them the perfect blend of the two aspects to be in command.
It was something they really screwed in the first two just for the sake of being pc about it, by promoting Uhura into the mix and largely sidelining Mccoy from the onscreen triangle of main characters. But that doesnt work, because Uhuras main purpose in Rodenberry's eyes was to be a black female officer serving on the Bridge as an equal in skills and importance to Chekov and Sulu nothing to do with reflecting an aspect of Kirks character. }}}

Karl Urban said in an interview with Empire he almost didn't return for the new film, as he felt Bones had virtually nothing interesting to do in Into Darkness (which I'd agree with), Pegg phoned him up and told him Bones would be pared off with Spock for most of the film, Urban apparently agreed to return straight away...
