Breaking Bad!

Post by bungobaggins on Sun Oct 13, 2013 1:15 am

I feel like there should be an official Breaking Bad thread (seems kind of strange now that the show is over, but whatever). This can be for discussion, but it will probably just end up being me posting fan-art and videos.

Ringo, as you are about to start the second half of season 5, I would recommend watching this fan made promo. I really like the music and editing, and setting it all over Walt's monologue from the first season is great.

Eldo, no watch! Spoilers! Razz:

Good idea, Bungo, this might stop us from hijacking any more threads (at least with Breaking Bad related stuff) Very Happy

Spoiler:
Damn, that promo was great. Playing Walt's monologue from that one day with the pillow and showing all that he's done and what he's become since then, that was a brilliant idea, and a sad thing to watch. "And that's how you would remember me; that's the worst part." - I'm thinking the writers must have had it all planned when they wrote this scene, the entire monologue is a perfect set-up for what's to come. Thanks for posting Smile

LAST EPISODE ENDING SPOILERS. DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE ENTIRE SERIES.
Spoiler:
Anyone find it interesting that near the end Walt was like both Gus and Mike? In the car wash when Lydia showed up while Skylar was there, Walt was saying," Have an A1 day" and treating her like a regular customer. It was just like Gus when he conducted business at Los Pollos Hermonos. Or in the last episode, when Walt went to Gretchen and Elliot's house he was Mike verbatim. Seriously if Mike was in that scene instead, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Walt takes on the characteristics of people he killed. At least with those two anyways. Very neat.
I like how everything came full circle at the end though. Walt tried to kill himself in the first episode and it was his bullet that inevitably killed him.
I think Jesse's character had good closure too. He was this lost soul, a confused youth who needed guidance. We saw that he was creative at his heart, but unfortunately his outlet for it was meth. That nod that Walt gave him was his way of saying that everything was taken care of and for Jesse to move on with his life. He set him free from the mercenaries both physically, from captivity, and emotionally, from constantly needing his approval for everything.

Last episode spoiler:
Damn... I just finished the last episode, and I'm half in shock, half dunno-what-the-hell-I-feel. Agree 100% about Jesse, I'm glad he at least wasn't wasted in the end, he deserved to get out of it all and get on with his own life away from Walt and all the shit he was brought into. Those two nods they gave each other at the end said all there was to say, no need for dialogue, however well these writers write them.

Spot-on about Gus and Mike, bungo, well observed. I hadn't thought about that, but now that you say it it's all there. You can even say that Walt's massacre of Jack's crew was done just like the way Jack and his gang used to operate - heavy gunfire and leave none alive. Neatly observed about Walt killing himself too. In the end he went on his own terms, and in a meth-lab no less. His confession to Skyler that he did it all for himself because he liked it shows in the way he almost affectionately touches the tank as he falls and dies. He loved being Heisenberg.

I need to get out of my house and contemplate all this, it's too much to take in all at once. But wow, what a great show it has been, now I can finally have some peace of mind in my days, this show has had me all worked up constantly, wondering and fearing what's to come in the next episode :DAnd I'm kind of glad it had an ending which doesn't keep you awake at night, like The Sopranos had Smile

Made this a response to Bungo, should've been to RA - consider this a fix Very Happy

Spoiler:
After Walt killed Gus he told Jesse that now that he was in charge no one else had to die. He was either naive/hopeful (milquetoast Walter White) or lying through his teeth in order to manipulate Jesse (Heisenberg). I think it's a little of both, but I lean more towards Heisenberg. If Walt hadn't accepted by now that violence and death are inherent in this business, after killing Krazy 8, dealing with Tuco, the cousins, and Gus, he had to be totally out of hid mind. So I'm inclined to believe he was just manipulating Jesse as he began, as RA said, to take on the character of Gus/Mike. The guy at the top who now has to do whatever it takes to keep things the way he wants them, even killing a former business associate for absolutely no reason. Fucking Walter. Mad

As for Jesse, I was very glad he survived. I was also glad he didn't kill Walt, and didn't let Walt manipulate him in the end. I got this picture from the Breaking Bad subreddit and it's shows really well how Jesse, who was always being dragged around by others (and always being called "kid") can finally make his own decisions. I like to think that he got to Alaska eventually. Smile

I should clarify that all the spoilers I labeled pertain to the final episode.

I also want to add something else.

Finale Spoilers:
In the end at Jack's compound, Walt was EXTREMELY lucky. Lucky that Jack just didn't kill him off the bat, lucky that Jesse was still alive and he was able to stall, lucky that none of Jack's men were standing on the opposite side of his car. Also lucky that he died before the cops got to him. A very lucky ending, but I think it's the ending we needed to tie up all the loose ends, and I really enjoyed the finale so I'm not really complaining. (And I guess Walt was lucky in a lot of his other exploits. Getting Gus to visit Hector comes to mind, Hank arriving unexpectedly at Tuco's hideout, etc.)

Spoiler:
Indeed, Walt was very lucky throughout the entire series. This is something Jesse points out to Hank and Gomez too, when they suggest that he wears a wire. Love those four pictures of Jesse, Bungo Smile

To add a spoiler-free thought to the thread, Saul Goodman has to be the best and most entertaining crook lawyer ever created Very Happy He added something to every episode he was in with his comments, metaphors and character. Loved him throughout the entire series Very Happy

You might be interested to hear that a Breaking Bad spinoff featuring Saul is in the works. Smile

I agree, I love Saul's character. (And I'm hoping the spinoff show turns out good, but as long as it's the same talent writing-producing-directing, I think it should turn out great. (but that's what I thought about The Hobbit! ))

Got so excited I forgot to watch the vid :lol:It definitely looks promising, love this idea. Liked the 75% humour, 25% darkness bit as opposed to Breaking Bad - a Saul Goodman show has to be a comedy show :)I hope they don't make it a sit com, though, I can't stand that background laughing.

Spoiler:
Think the spin-off might be set in the place where Saul gets relocated to in the final episode? That could work, him setting up a small, but more anonymous business there. I like the idea Very Happy

Spoiler:
That could work, and nothing has been set in stone yet as to when it will take place. (And, of course, Vince Gilligan isn't going to give us any hints.) But I've been leaning, ironically, towards a prequel. I think Saul's life would be a little more light-hearted before he meets Walt (or at least less complicated). When I look at Saul in the penultimate episode I really can't see him getting back into law after all that has happened and he needs to keep a low profile. And what would a Breaking Bad show be with out Albuquerque? Sad

I don't think it will turn into a full-fledged sit-com with a laugh-track, it wouldn't really fit into the Breaking Bad universe. So I wouldn't be too worried about that. Smile

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out!

Yup, that's all we can say for sure at this point, I guess Very Happy I wouldn't mind a prequel - could be quite fun to see how he became the lawyer he is in Breaking Bad, how he built that incredible network of his. I mean, he knows guys who know guys like Gus Fring, he knows that "Disappearer" - lots of potential for a great show here Very Happy

Spoiler:
I think the way Saul finally got away from it all was befitting his character. He didn't need to become confrontational. He stayed as charming as ever with, "It's over."
Maybe the Spin-off will be about a trip to Belize or two with Gus and Mike Wink

Great vid Very Happy Excellent editing, fit well with the Inception theme as well Smile It didn't feel good at all when he spoke to Marie that last time, you didn't want it him to go, but you knew that he wouldn't be coming home.
