Funny that in the book I imagined him a bit Eomer like. Couldn't be that much more different.

It's interesting how people imagine things so differently.

I'm not sure he exactly fits how I imagined him, though he's not far away, but he has come to epitomize the role for me. Just perfect casting. Which is one of the things this show has been so good at (in most cases.)

That's not to say I love everything about the way he's been written. To have his two first scenes take place in a brothel is kind of hammering home that aspect of his character with a sledgehammer. And that they had him stand up Tyrions welcome comitee instead of the Dornish feeling dishonoured by the Lannisters sending Tyrion to welcome them changes his character a bit.

Small things like that, but generally I think they got him pretty much spot on.

Less than three hours until showtime.  The Mountain and the Viper!  I can't wait ... but I might have to since I've got to prepare for tomorrow morning. Sofa

I..... I just watched it....

Spoiler:
pale  pale  pale  pale  pale  pale  pale  pale  No  No  No  No That was absolutely disgusting. No. I even knew it was going to happen because I read it somewhere, but it still was horrible. He was so cool and he dies LIKE THAT? Tyrion's face was heartbreaking. And what's the deal with Sansa and Little Finger, are they weirdly together now?

Only two episodes left, and the next is the attack on Castle Black!

I've finished episode 5 of season 1. Apart from not being able to remember what most of the secondary character's names are, it's pretty good. Might as well keep going. Shrugging

If there's half as many names and secondary characters in the show as there are in the book, I can understand that very well Smile I was confused at first as well when I started reading, and to be honest, I still am Laughing

Bungo - the series actually takes a while to get going. You will soon be in to the thick of things.

Yeah I usually hate when they say a characters full name aloud for the benefit of the audience. But I actually really appreciate it here. (I didn't know what the kings name was until I looked up a big family tree.) So far if I had to pick a favorite character it would be Tyrion or John Snow. I know Tyrion is around for a while so I'll try not to get too attached to Snow.

Good, I'm hoping to see the bigger picture events pan out (If the horse people and that blonde chick will gather an army and try to take back the throne. Although they hadn't gone into detail about why the blonde guy lost the throne in the first place. See what I mean about keeping track of names?).

Re: Game of Thrones -- TV ONLY

I watched the first half of season one as it was airing on HBO, but I had mixed feelings about it and once I missed a couple of episodes I never got caught up. I've seen pieces of the subsequent seasons as well, and recently getting into a big ASOIAF phase again I'll probably try watching the whole show. But I watched the "Blackwater" episode from season two earlier today on a whim, and...

Spoiler:
...while I totally see why it gets so much praise, it felt too small and too short. I know that's a somewhat silly criticism to give when the show already made it ridiculously huge and long by TV standards, but it speaks to a limitation of the medium. I recall reading an interview with GRRM, who has done a lot of TV work over the years, where he said that with ASOIAF he wanted to do something really big and epic without any budget issues to hold him back. Of course, with the show now being adapted to TV, these issues result in some of Martin's vision being neutered, even with HBO budgets. He said the same thing about the Iron Throne; they had to go with a smaller version largely because their set wasn't big enough. I don't want to be a grump because this is clearly still head and shoulders above the vast majority of fantasy TV, but it's disappointing knowing that it could have been even better. Well, I say "could have", but I'm not sure it was ever practical. Oh well.

Anyway, from my fragmented viewing, I have enjoyed more recent episodes more than early one, and I'm curious to see if that perspective survives my planned marathon of the entire show.

It's been ages since I've watched the first few episodes, but don't they explain Robert's Rebellion in there? It might be helpful to peruse one of the two major wikis.

http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Robert%27s_Rebellion -- this one is for the show but will contain references to more recent episodes, though backstory stuff tends to be safer.
http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Robert%27s_Rebellion -- this is for the books, and tends to be a higher-quality wiki in general IMO, but has spoilers for stuff past the point that the show has reached.

I hope that you enjoy the show. I got big into the book series in 2009 after being introduced to it by people on another Tolkien forum, and getting back into it lately has been a lot of fun and is sort of deepening my appreciation for the series. I've read a fair bit of high fantasy literature over the years and this is one of the only ones that have made me stop to reconsider if LOTR is still my favorite book. Not that ASOIAF has passed it yet (it'll need to be complete first, and hopefully bounce back from the fourth and to a lesser degree the fifth books), but it's really good.

They mentioned Ned's father and brother being killed by "the mad king" at King's Landing. But other than that I don't think much else was explained, unless I wasn't paying attention, which knowing me, is a high probability.

I'm thinking of just buying the DVDs instead of finding illegal streams. I'm sick of buffering and low video quality.

season 1 is quite a slow burn. I wasnt too keen at first, but by jolly I am hooked now.  It was season 2 that got me really into it, so yeah slow burn. It keeps getting better and better.  Very Happy and dvds are probably a good idea, its really nice to take in all the scenery and details with a good quality thingie, the other day I saw episode 7 in HD on Sky, it was pretty Amazing.
