Sir Ian nailed Gandalf- Mrs Figg

You mean apart from the crankynees, swift temper and bent back?

Did you listen to the radio version Mrs Figg and Michaels Hordens Gandalf? Just for a comparison.

I found Galadriel not exactly creepy in the book but something to be slightly wary of, I think Bakshi captured that quality of beauty yet otherworldy and somehow dangerous well, and I think Annette Crosbies voice is almost perfect for her (could do with being a little deeper) Although again the radio play version of Galadriel is pretty damn good too.

Mirror scene starts at roughly 18:50

Which acting? Galadriel in Bakshi or the radio play or Michael Hordens Gandalf? scratch
And when you mean stagey do you mean like a play or that it feels staged? Just curious.

I like Cate I just wish Pj had let her act her big speech instead of covering her in special effects and making her wave her arms about like someone just shoved an electric current up her bum. Shocked

the video clip you posted above of the Mirror of Galadriel and the acting therein I found a bit stagey as in that over theatrical style of acting for some of them and for Galadriel it didnt feel real as it was nothing in particular just a bit blah.

I think that scene is not well shot (I dont think many scenes in Bakshis version are making it all the odder Pj nicked so many) but was it the voice acting you found stagey or the animation of the character?
If the animation I agree, if the voice acting I wouldnt agree. Try the radio version! Very Happy

Very Happy I wouldnt mind PJ's so much if not for the electrocution for her big speech. I love the dialogue in that scene. Theres alot of hidden meanings going on there and subtext, PJ's looses all of that.
Especially his woeful decisin to move the line "You are the footstep of doom to us Frodo" to Frodo's arrival at the borders of Lothlorien where it is meaningless in that context and to leave out the explanation of why he is the footsep of doom.

Mrs Figg says it better than me about the voice acting in Bakshi's film.

I think most of us here disliked PJ's handling of Galadriel but focusing just on a couple of scenes really misses the big picture and how PJ truly eclipses Bakshi.

I dunno about PJ eclisping Bakshi- its like comparing two abnormalties to see which one is less abnormal.

Norc I was caught up in being stubborn (again) but now I have time to be equally stubborn at you.
I think you should rewatch it if ou think the dialogue is only bits of Tolkien and in the wrong places- given the little Tolkien Pj uses at all its remarkable he probably manages to move more of it around and give it to diffeent people than Bakshi does. In fact I am strugglin gto think of an example in Bakshi.
As to gayness- everything was like that in the 70's Norc it was the decade of disco after all and glitter balls.
Actually when watching the film to appreciate the astetics of the visuals it may be best to first spend an hour staring at a lava lamp placed in front of a wall with brown and orange swirly wallpaper and sat on a similary patterend and coloured rug. Nod

If we're talking about The Hobbit and bunny sleds, boar-riding, and all that I might be inclined to agree with you (though we'll have to see how the actual films play out). Laughing But as far as LOTR is concerned, I stand by what I said.

yeah, I should rewatch it. and give a true report. Because I'm not sure if I should love it for it strangness and weird way of telling the story or hate it. the dialoug is poorer than in PJ, because, even though it|s tolkien, it's misplaced since it's not followed up woth more tolkien, it's just bits and pieces.

View with an open mind Norc- and for that final authentic touch do so wearing a garish rainbow striped wooly tanktop and cordory trousers that make an annoying shwoosh sound everytime you take a step and sit behind someone who is smoking for the whole film-it'll be just like being back in a cinema in the 70's. Very Happy

Where to start? My goodness you guys go on and on when I'm not around. Rolling Eyes

I'll hone on this 'voice' acting business. The voice acting was fine in Bakshi (save for Gollum - and only him because he was gay, and Gollum wasn't gay, not that that there's anything wrong with that!) You guys complain for the sake complaining.

I still think Bakshi was truer than PJ, and thus more satisfying generally for all it's patent faults. Given thirty years of innovation in film technology, and take away thirty years of PJ's modern mass-audience egotism-drven modern-character-bullshitization, Bakshi's film wins by a street. Why? Because his adaptation, for all it's warts, are far more respectful to Tolkien than PJ's is.

I think of things like this, and it relates to the idea of 'big' is better than artful 'small, and 'money' spent on the lavish and ill-made, is better than 'money' in short supply used by craftsmen to create things of great intrisic beauty ----where was I? Actually, I think I've made my point already! cheers

Better adaptation doesn't do it. You could have it all straight from the book, but if the execution would make any newbie never want to read the book, then it's a catastrophe. I rate bakshi as close to a catastrophe on that score.
