Oh, we'll have our gripes.

Only the first two Star Wars films were near perfect. Slim pickings ever since, with some flashes of the old magic.

When the trailer revealed that the Emperor or whatever was going to be in the new movie, I thought, "Wait, what? That guy from the Prequel movies? Why wouldn't they bring back someone from the originals?" I only watched the original trilogy once, and that was back in 2004 or something.

Well, it's the same actor playing Palpitine in both prequels and originals. Same character, just with and without latex added after Mace Windu tried to kill him.

Ian McDermid I think his name is (somewhere close).

The guy who takes over the galaxy in the prequels (Senator then Chancellor Palpatine) is the same Emperor that electrified Luke and Vader kills in Return of the Jedi. Same actor too.

Not sure if that helped or not, Lance. I suspect Forest doesn't know Star Wars much better than he knows Star Trek. Wink

(or about at my level of knowledge of Dr Who)

I'd be the last one to defend the plot lines of the original series. At least half of them were straight-up plays off of human history that belonged in a fantasy series rather than science fiction. If they had tried to disguise the origins it would have been acceptable as metaphor, but unfortunately Romulans and their Senate were pretty run-of-the-mill type of writing. Fortunately in the Next Generation the writing improved immeasurably.

Oo that's a concept!

I've seen a Buster Keaton movie with one of the original organ players playing one of the original organs. It was a total trip.

I have read about that before. I would like to know how in to that "micro-biotic" world they would have gotten. I mean would there be microbe characters? Or just references to that whole thing a bit like episodes 1-3 and the midichlorians.

So possibly dodged a bullet but only to get smashed in the face with a barbed wire wrapped 2x4.

Since microbiotics is a focus of what Lucas said I doubt it would just be a casual mention. It sounds more like a plot driver.

{{ Its one of the weirdest things about Lucas vision of Star Wars from the second trilogy onwards and its midi-chlorians, why as a writer he would ever think this a good idea.

The only way something like the Force can work is to allude to it, to hint at how it works. It doesn't have to be magic, but it has to feel magical to work.
Empire in particular struck this balance perfectly, drawing on various religous and spiritual ideas particualry from the east and from works such as Carlos Casteneda (Yoda's little speech during Lukes training about energy fields is almost word for word from those books)- its specific enough to give you the sense there is a tangible but unknowable Force at work in the universe you can learn to tap into and utilise without destroying its sense of wonder and mystery, nor its eluviness to grasp as a practioner.

As soon as you go and explain in detail how it all works you kill it stone dead as a narrative device- destroying everything about it that made it seem compelling in the first place.
And this is really, really, obvious to just about anyone whose ever read a story. Which is why I am constantly amazed Lucas wanted to go down this route in the first place. }}

Nostalgia.

We keep hoping to recapture that feeling we got from that blast of fanfare with the main title smashing into our faces; that screen crawl; then the huge ship wiping across the top.  Nothing was like it before, never the same in cinema after.

Yeah, 2001 was there first, but it took its sweet time building.  Star Wars was like being thrown into the middle of a prize fight.
