yep great idea, I want to do that already, but condensing part of a thesis into a journal article sounds incredibly difficult. I think there is an art to it. No I might try to re-write a chapter of 20,000 words that I finished for the upgrade, but it will probably end up pants. Mad
Not really doing it to get a job as such, but I would like to be thought of as an expert in my field, and write books n'stuff. I am already gearing up to do another PhD after this on a related subject. Thank god for Grammarly though, my grammar and punctuation skills are rubbish. Laughing

Oh if you're not getting a job after then you'll have time to write a paper. But yes, condensing is harder than expanding. It hurts so much more to cut part of yourself out than to pack on the pounds.

Just...................whatever [6] - Page 37 Solsic10

So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen,
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
,They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing, behind us — listen!
All the long echoes sing the same delight
This shortest day
As promise wakens in the sleeping land.
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends, and hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year, and every year.
Welcome Yule!

{{ What UFO! scratch Nice poem Az, in similar xmas spirit! }}

A Scottish Fairy

I am a wee little fairy
On tap o’ the Christmas tree
It’s no’ a job I fancy
Well how would you like tae be me

A' tarted up wi’ tinsel
It’s enough to mak ye boak
An a couple of jaggy branches
Rammed up the back o’ your frock.

An these wee lights a’ roon me
I canna get my sleep
An’ there’s the yearly visit
Fae Santa – big fat creep.

On Christmas Day I’m stuck up here
While you’re wiring in
An’ naebodoy says, Hey you up there
Could you go a slug o’gin?

The Christmas Tree’s a bonney sight
As the firelight softly flickers
But think o’me – I’m stuck up here
Wi’ needles in my knickers.

Well, why not? I only have two complaints.

1. In America most of the festivals seem clustered in the colder season. Only July 4 escapes this.
2. Around here there's been a trend to start pushing the next holiday almost BEFORE the last one is over. In my estimation any holiday that happens midweek should extend into the following weekend, but the stores don't get this obvious thinking.

{{ Thing is most of what they sell- easter eggs, the cheap halloween sweets and costumes form sweat shops, the xmas crap, its rubbish, its overpriced cheap tat for the most part, or stuff no one wants the the rest of the year round like turkey or advent calendars or an overpriced hollow chocolate egg made from inferior quality chocolate.
But in the past it was a kind of knowing deal- we knew it was overpriced novelty tat, they knew they were selling us overpriced novelty tat but we agreed to it because novelty tat is fun in short bursts and ITS ONLY AT (insert holiday of choice here) YOU GET IT. ITS ONLY THIS ONCE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR.
But that thinking is gone if its all year bloody round! Mad They broke the unspoken contract between seller and customer on overpriced novelty tat! Evil or Very Mad }}

Those octopi are cool. I'm not sure why exactly they fit the definition of steampunk, except in this case you kind of know it when you see it. The US North East is definitely steampunk territory.
