I agree, Capaldi was pretty dark and intense, to go from that to bright and breezy is odd.

Upcoming Big Finish leak (Catherine Tate had already let slip she was recording more this week, but very happy to see Bernard Cribbins back as Wilf Smile )

I agree with Nicola bryant, absolutely appalled a BBC Journalist would comment about Capaldi in that way.

He's tied as my favourite Doctor, so naturally I am biased...no Doctor is universally beloved, but to bring this up shortly before a new Doctor starts reeks of favouritism, bias and frankly comes across as stabbing Capaldi in the back, a BBC Journalist of all people should be more self aware there were better ways to phrase this, it reads like he is directly blaming Capaldi for any perceived issues with his era (more to the point, even those viewers who don't like the 12th Doctor generally agree Capaldi is a great actor, and a enthusiastic, warm hearted ambassador for the franchise), why not focus on raising up the new doctor rather than dragging down the old one.

Mad  Extremely Crabbit F You

I had little interest in Series 11 anyway (I've always been in favour of a female Doctor, and really rate Jodie as an actress...but the trailers/news/leaks about Series 11 haven't piqued my interest at all) but I don't think I can support it after this.

Think I'll stick with Big finish and old episodes for my Who fix.

{{Yup that a cheap, nasty shot that fortunately has got a lot of immediate flack.

The premiere of the new series was in Sheffield the other night- reviews are a bit mixed but generally on the positive side-

'In his four-star review for the Sun, Rod McPhee said Whittaker "may be the breath of fresh air needed to revive a flagging franchise".
"She doesn't always strike the right balance between quirky geek and masterful Time Lord. And at times she comes across as irritatingly childlike.
"But the highest praise is that you quickly forget you're watching a female Doctor and just accept you're watching THE Doctor."

Writing in the i paper, Stephen Kelly complimented the show's improved production values.
"Never before has Doctor Who looked so crisp and cinematic, nor the CGI so convincing and expensive," he wrote.
As an episode of Doctor Who, The Woman Who Fell to Earth isn't perfect," said Huw Fullerton in The Radio Times.
"A few of the jokes (mainly focused on Whittaker getting used to her new incarnation) and lines of dialogue fall a bit flat.
"And on the whole it's definitely a less witty and quotable version of Who than we might have seen during the years of former showrunner Steven Moffat."
"Does this first episode get everything right, all of the time? No," said Digital Spy's Morgan Jeffrey.
"But it scores where it really counts, showing more than enough wit and flair to convince us that we're entering into a new era that'll be every bit as bold and, yes, brilliant as we'd hoped."
The Telegraph's Ben Lawrence said: "Chibnall has cooled things down with some much-needed accessibility, but still something is missing.
"There is also a distinct lack of interest in the show's heritage.
"Although Whittaker's performance captured the essence of previous incarnations of her character, the overall effect of the show sometimes felt like a trip too far from the familiar."
Martin Belam in The Guardian said: "The sheer number of new characters, alongside guest star Sharon D Clarke, necessarily means that the alien menace is more of a low-key device to bring the characters together and introduce them to us, than a world-ending threat.
"That's not to say that the creatures' appearance won't give children nightmares."
Empire said The Woman Who Fell To Earth "looks beautiful in the show's new widescreen format".
"Indeed, everything Jodie Whittaker and new showrunner Chris Chibnall have been promising us about the ramped-up, cinematic style of the new season turns out to be true.
"Those new lenses really do make a difference in giving the show a more textured, epic feel, matched by new composer Segun Akinola's atmospheric score."- BBC News }}

Yeah, it's not believable that police would just let her get on like that. And Whittaker doesn't quite own her lines. But her basic mannerisms feel correct for the Doctor.

What is this I heard about this season not containing any of the aliens and monsters from the show's history? Is that true? I thought there was a legal reason that they had to include Daleks every single season.

I'm guessing that must be a fan rumour, IIRC it was rather complicated and time consuming for the producers to get the rights to the Daleks back in Series 1 (the rights are still owned by the estate of Terry Nation, the creator) and they actually planned a version of the episode 'Dalek' with a different alien in place (the writer of 'Dalek' Rob Shearman loosely adapted the script from his 6th Doctor audio drama, 'Jubilee'), the daleks have made at least a cameo appearance every year since the show returned, so it's easy to assume that is may be contractual obligations...but as far as I know the BBC has never confirmed this one way or the other, I think their constant appearances every year are just because they are a popular and money spinning part of the franchise.

I must admit I'm a tad bored with them at this point and feel some of their power and threat has been neutered by over exposure, so I can see a case for resting them for a few years.

{{Its still a bit of an unknown on the Dalek contract thing- there are series where it does seem like they just found a way to put them in to meet such a contract because they had to- for example there is no Dalek story in series 10- but they do make a random appearance in one scene, same goes for series 7- in both cases their 1 appearance could easily have been taken by say a Cyberman and served exactly the same plot function, which does give some credence to the contract idea as they are not Dalek stories, just quite literally Dalek cameos in other stories.

But yes Foest, according to Chibnall there will be no appearances from any previously seen monsters or enemies- but Who showrunners have a tendency to lie! RTD said much the same and before we knew it he'd brought back Daleks, Cybermen, the Master and the Time Lords, even K9 and Sarah-Jane!}}

All New Who - Page 9 Empty Re: All New Who

Post by Pettytyrant101 on Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:57 pm

{{ Spoilery first impressions-

Spoiler:

Like much of Chibnall Who previously this was, ok. So much was new its best maybe to break it down- new intro, no idea we didn't get an intro of any sort, if there was even a title card screen I must have blinked and missed it- we did get to finally hear the new version of the classic theme at the end, and I liked its old skool aesthetic save for the percussion, which seemed dialled up way to much for my tastes and was on the edge of giving me a headache by its end!

Before I talk about Jodie I want to mention the general plot and characters besides the Doctor.
And here is where I have some issues.
The character of the gran provides us with our tear jerking final act, or should do if I gave two hoot about her but I didn't. And why didn't I?- well she lacks either RTD's ability to present a fully rounded feeling character in a short space of time, or Moffats trick of using sharp dialogue and back and forth conversation to do the same. The gran is a plucky gran who throws herself with enthusiasm into whatever she does and is jolly and kind-hearted, but that's kind of it, that's all she has, and her importance and relationship to her grandson Ryan is solely symbolised by the learning to ride a bike scenes.
So when her untimely demise comes toward the end there just isn't enough to spark the emotion it should. We get more of that from the excellent speech Grahame gives at her funeral.But worse to my mind this is the first episode of your new Doctor, it should in some fashion end either triumphantly or humorously, light-hearted at any rate. The death of the Gran and her funeral kind of grind things to a bit of a miserable halt- instead of the new TARDIS crew heading off full of excitement they are all bit on a downer. It seems a very odd plot choice to me.

Yaz the policewoman is the least delved into character, she is shown as capable, ambitious and pleasant but at this point also a bit forgettable. Ryan is a young man with  a bit more depth, he lost his parents, his mother fairly recently and lives with his gran and her second husband Grahame, whom he hasn't accepted (wouldn't it be nice for once to see a step parent relationship where they liked each other for once?!) and he also suffers from a motor disease that affects his coordination- though it seems a bit selective, he cant ride a bike in a straight line for 2 seconds without falling off but he can scale a huge dock crane without too much trouble!

As to the villains- well squiggly ball of electric worms and knock off Predator (no camouflage suit but does have a sort of Predator vision mode but with less colours). There isn't a lot to say about the main villains, as in most first Doctor stories the main villain is more there to define thh new Doctor against than to provide an in-depth complex plot, and here's where I had issue with this plot- it is simple- evil Predator alien comes to earth to find a random target that's been marked for him to hunt down in order to claim his trophy, and stick teeth in his face (Ill come back to that) but he is such a bad fellow he is also cheating, breaking the rules of the hunt by employing squiggly tentacle thing to locate the mark for him. Yet this simple plot is made to be complicated and as if its a great mystery to be unravelled and it ends up simply feeling dragged out as a plot, lacking the substance to sustain what they try to make of it and so becoming a bit disengaging in the middle. Its also occasionally very clumsy in its writing. The tendency of Chibnall to just present you with some character traits and expect you to feel something for the person is no more event than in the dock yard guard who dies.
We are introduced to him on the phone talking to his granddaughter and telling her what a lucky granddad he is to have her call to talk to him. I nearly laughed out loud, he may as well have announced it was last night before retirement, it was bordering a parody of a character doomed to shortly die. Needless to say he walks out the door and immediately does die.
Was this clumsy conversation meant to make us feel something for this introduced for a minute and killed character?
And back to the teeth- did I miss something or where they just claimed as the trophy bit as its less gruesome than a Predator ripping out someone's spinal column and skull? But why do they stick them in their face? How does that work ? Does it make them attractive to others of their species back home? How would that evolve that you can stick other species teeth in your face and they just sort of bed in and grow there? Moffat monsters liked to play on childhood fears, the thing out the corner of your eye, the thing under your bed ect is their a phobia of someone ripping your teeth out and embedding them in their face I missed? I just dont really get it, like they pulled random words out a hat and got alien, teeth, face.

So yeah, the plot is over complicated for its substance, the villains are a bit meh and rip off in terms of alien on the hunt on earth for a trophy, and there are some very sketchily drawn characters.

So the good? Well it looks lovely, the new cameras and effects team have done a sterling job of that. The direction and editing do their job without drawing too much attention to themselves, workmanlike rather than noticeable or displaying a particular flair or style. More like what you expect and get on most shows with for hire directors making episodes for it. You hope for a bit more creativity for Who though there was nothing as such wrong with either.

And of course there is Jodie. I have left her late to talk about because the episode does the same, introducing the main outline of the plot and the other characters first. It in fact takes a while to get to the appearance of our 13th Doctor, and any hope of an explanation for how she survived the fall can be forgotten- she simply lands by smashing through the roof of a train. Apparently to no harm.

That aside, and a few tricky lines she doesn't quite nail, the 13th is clearly the Doctor. You can take the vast majority of her lines and run them in your head in the voice of a range of previous Doctors and find they work just as well. In fact at times a few of her observations and quips felt decidedly Moffaty to me and I could easily imagine them coming from 11 or 12. She is a little at this point lacking in the Doctors usual sense of authority, there are moments she rises to it but at other times her Doctor seems, well not timid, but not quite commanding enough. However overall there is also a lot of potential for a good 13th Doctor.

The change of sex is well handled, it comes up once fairly naturally and doesn't get another mention all episode save a joke when choosing her new clothes that it had been along time she had to buy women's clothes (another line that felt quite Moffaty to me), which is all to the better and lets the Doctor just be the Doctor without her gender being an issue or plot point.

Jodie is in fact the highlight of the episode and at least settles the question of can a woman play the Doctor and it still be the Doctor? Yes because the Doctor is an idea and anyone can be an idea. And Jodie's and Chibnal's idea of the Doctor, at least at this early stage is quit recognisably the Doctor.

So overall I give it, scrapping a 7 to of 10. Forgettable villains and unnecessarily convoluted plot, some dodgy character moments and some not well enough rounded characters, balance some good performances, a solid if not as impactful as I would have liked first outing for 13 and decent effects and solid enough direction.

Spoiler:
I liked it. No Moffat and Jodi did good. A few funny moments, some nice nods to past Doctors. Stupid catchfrases weren't catchfrases but parts of long ramblings. Predator and Tooth fairy's lovechild and Tangela the pokemon were... there. They were there. And they looked nice. Tangela wins, probaly due to not talking. People and interaction where a bit RTD-ish, and that is better than Moffat cause Moffat shouldn't write people at all. Worked ok to introduce new faces and the new Doc. Not so good storywise though. But it's not Moffat and I didn't hate any companion. So... Yey?

{{Well if your main criteria is its not written by Moffat then presumably anything would have done for you.

Spoiler:

Having watched it twice now the things I didn't like seem all the more glaring.
The plots a mess, it doesn't make any real sense or stand up to much scrutiny- so an alien race decides who its next leader is by sending them to another planet to prove themselves by hunting down a marked prey and taking their teeth to stick in its face, succeeding in doing this makes them leader- as obviously this would qualify you to run a planet. Also they say they got consent to fight on earth because Ryan randomly touched the glowy thing in the air- so this alien race gets consent to use a planet for their hunt, by randomly making unreadable alien symbols appear in the air in front of some poor unsuspecting sod and hoping they touch the right bit of it- and that counts as giving consent even though they dont know what they are doing? Oh and they've done all this before, and got some poor sods sister, but if someone touching the glowy square symbol is giving consent for the whole planet to be used for the hunt, why do they keep coming to Sheffield? Bit handy the guy whose sister got nabbed before was living right there to go see- I suspect that entire subplot only exists to stretch out the simple plot further as it effects nothing, and provide a handy workshop setting for 13 to make her new sonic in. So yeah.

There is way too much exposition- show dont tell- but this is tell, tell, tell, almost every character expositions their life story at one point or another.

And whilst the gender issue with regards the Doctor is well-handled not so sure on second watch about everyone else- the men are all to one degree or another a bit useless or flawed, the women, well arent. Ryan cant even ride a bike, has a shit job he hates and gets frustrated, Grahame can no longer do his job as he is in recovery for cancer and is the least enthusiastic about aliens and stuff, and the 'victim' of the hunt is a crane driver whose scared of heights and needs a self help tape to tell him he has any worth.
Yaz on the otherhand is a professional, a policewomen who is ambitious, and she is smart, confident and brave and doesn't put a foot wrong. The Gran is a nurse, smart confident, caring and brave and then we have the Doctor who also doesn't put a foot wrong all episode, no questionable actions, no dubious moral decisions, no 10's 'no second chances' or 11's 'basically run' or 12's dubious did he push him to his death or not questions- she just does everything right which could be worrying going forward as it does play into the recent media trend of flawless female characters who never make mistakes or have personalty issues. Also tricky to take jeopardy seriously when the Doctor can fall from orbit through the atmosphere, smash through a train roof, and land on her feet like nothing happened and without so much as a throwaway line to explain how that was possible.

Also on a second watch I am not convinced by the editing- in fact I thought watching again it let the piece  down and was poorly done in several scenes where the editing did not support the performance as strongly as it should have. Particularly the crane scenes and some of the multiple cast scenes.
The music too played a part in this, in general I liked the low key use of the incidental music and its 80's vibe, but it lacked any big theme for the Doctor which Murray used to provide so great effect, so when the moment comes for the Doctor to do the Doctor stuff its a bit flat in comparison without a rousing driving theme to accompany the dialogue.

As I said in my initial thoughts the strongest thing to come of it is the 13th Doctor- but for the rest there's quite a lot in the characterisation which is poorer than RTD, and in the dialogue where some of the jokes fall flat, which is poorer than Moffat, leaving the lingering worry that its the worst of both worlds!

For all I was not a fan of RTD making the show so character based and soap like, he at least was accomplished at writing the characters. In her first two scenes RTD gave Jackie Tyler more character, personality and nuance than Chibnal gave the gran character in this entire episode.
And of the companions, or 'friends' as they now call them, only Ryan got any fleshing out and even then it wasnt much. He was defined more by his flaws than his character pluses. I felt we knew much more about Rose, or Amy's characters and personalities after their respective debuts than we do about any of this lot so far.

Also the 'predator' alien really sucks, more so second time through when you cant help but notice none of the plot surrounding him makes much sense or is worth considering too deeply. But mainly it looks terrible and boring, its just a guy in a beefed up biker suit really- if you compare it to something like the Fisher King from Before the Flood it just seems dull and lacking in effort and imagination. Squidgy tentacle thing is better visually but given than it turns out not to be anything interesting at all, its basically just a drone device for looking for stuff, it kind of fades into insignificance as the story progresses.

Its also dark, most of the episode takes place at night, everything shot very moodily but this also means darkly. Fortunately this doesn't look like a stylistic choice so much as just an episode choice, as the next time trailer seems to show a much sunnier, brighter escapade next week.

But on a second viewing I think what mainly struck is that it does not handle tone shift well, the shift form funeral to the Doctor cracking jokes whilst trying on clothes is jarring and the funeral in general just pulls the whole mood down when it should be going up. Being able to shift tone on a dime is one of the traits of Who, and on this episode I dont think they've quite got a handle on doing it well yet.

I'd sum it up as a good debut for 13 in a bad story. Bit like the 6th Doctors start really.

Still did well in the overnights, the Sunday drama slot plus curiosity about a female Doctor seems to have worked with the official figures being 8.1 million (for comparison 11th Hour was 6.7 million on overnights, Deep Breath 6.8, Rose got 9.9 but time-shifting was not yet a big thing, as both 11th Hour and Deep breath finished up at over 10 million- Jodies debut looks set to break 10million on the final figures no problem, the question will be by how much- it will be interesting to see how the figures go across the whole series).

Haha, I like how we can see Petty's crabbit beginning to build.

In my lifetime such a man hath, to my knowledge, been seen thrice before; and after each sight of him followed evil days and the death of men.'"

well, yeah, that should hardly come as a surprise. Now there is no RTD and no Moffat, so we should both be happy and try not to think about how it would have been if we could have had the best of both and none of the bad.

You know I was keeping expectations low, and I was preparing myself for the quality of the likes of Flash All New Who - Page 9 The_flash_3x02_paradox_jay_garrick
and
Spoiler:
Eru help me this is disturbingly close to what we got. A paper mache raddish cracks open. Predator-copycat arrives in a The-Terminator-has-landed pose. I thoght it might be a cyberman at first glance. We get a red shirted redshirt having a very red shirty phone call. And yes, I am rejoicing that nobody tells me that this crap is actually gold. But if you threw this into a plot with Flash or Legends of tomorrow, it would blend in seamlessly. I am really hoping Chibbers and the team is simply finding their voice, because this is... so weird.

But like for real you guys...(only slightly spoilery for the design of one of the baddies):
are we sure this was not a weird Pokemon crossover thing?

{I have to admit a certain level of relief on first watch at least that it wasn't a complete disaster. There's much I dont like about, and more I think about the plot and characters and some of the writing in general more those worry me- but I still think Jodie was good,m the essence of the Doctor seems still in tact (with the caveat I'm slightly worried she has been whitewashed of any negative traits- only time will tell on that one) and there is solid enough basis to work from here with 13. Enough that I am at least interested in where they will take the character of the Doctor, if considerably less interested about where the rest of them go! }}

{{ I didn't get a chance due to work to watch the episode with my better half, but now she has seen it I asked her what she thought.
I would class her as a Not-We generally, she has seen a few episodes now but its a drop in the Who bucket- she has seen some 9, a few 10, more 11, and a few 12. Of those she didn't mind Eccleston but the stories never really grabbed her, she is not a Tennant fan and tends not to want to watch any more from his era, likes Smith the most (not sure if this is because I got her to watch 11th Hour as her first Who so 11 is her Doctor in that sense) and she is a bit indifferent to 12, which means I dont think she is a fan but doesn't want to outright say so as he is my favourite of NuWho!

So 13? She liked Jodie, thought she acted very much as the Doctor based on what she had seen. As some have already drawn comparisons between 11 and 13 this is maybe not a surprise.
On the down side she felt it was too dark and a bit plodding in parts, the villain was a bit rubbish and overall the tone didn't sit with her as being very Doctor Whoish- I think her summing up of it feeling and looking like it was a spin off show from the Marvel universe was very accurate. And intentional on the shows makers part  who have openly expressed in interviews a desire to compete with such shows on the Netflix style platforms.
I'm guessing none of the companions, sorry 'friends' made much of an impression on either of us, as she never mentioned them and I completely forget to ask her about them!}}

{{Some odd things I noticed-

1. The Doctor says that 'half an hour ago I was a white haired Scotsman' that means it took her half an hour to fall to Earth?
2. Grahme and others seem completely unaware of the existence of aliens- despite NuWHo invading earth with aliens every year. Moffat at least used the cracks in time to swallow up major events and create a, well not a clean slate, but almost. It seems in this version of Who its just been reset without explanation.
3. They made big deal of it being set in Sheffield- but ethnically the episode is not at all representational of Sheffield, which according to the latest census data is 85% white British. This episode was more like 95% ethnic, even secondary characters such as the guy whose sister got taken, was from an ethnic background. In fact I think there were only 3 white people in the episode- two grandfathers, one of whom who dies after only a few lines and the Predator ripoff's target. }}}
