{{{ Fun is something the new series needs to rediscover in my view!

Stumbled on this 12 tribute vid- think its the best one Ive seen in terms of covering 12 completely in all his aspects- also excellent editing and music choices, well worth a watch }}

Big Finish are recasting The Brigadier and Kamelion, the latter was a non-character as far as I'm concerned and far from a fan favourite so I have no idea how they are going to develop him(?) but Culshaw is a talented impressionist so will probably do something interesting with the part.

As for recasting The Brigadier...I've always been against recasting without good reason and it feels like way too soon since Nicholas Coutney's passing, but BF have already recast the 3rd Doctor so they might as well recast the other major player of the era, Culshaw certainly does a very accurate impression Shocked sounds virtually the same to my ears.

All New Who - Page 14 Empty Re: All New Who

{{{I thought that was the worst one yet!

Initial spoilery thoughts-

Spoiler:

where's the plot? Again! I mean basically the plot is a lab that does genetic experiments on spiders get their spider stuff disposed by a shady company, which happens to be a coincidental subsidiary of bad Trump-alike American businessman, who happen to own a hotel he built on top of a landfill his shady company also run, and the landfill is inside a coal mine (because Sheffield!) under the hotel (how you get planning permission for that?!!)which coincidental Yas's mum has just got a job at managing.

And disposed spider stuff is combining with human rubbish tip and somehow produced giant killer spiders.
And after a lot of exposition dump scenes and pointless running about and looking at big spiders, the problem is resolved by playing grime music to lure all the spiders into a room- and for the love of the writing gods when they are trying to think of what to use to cause the vibrations why does the Doctor not think of her SONIC screwdriver, she waves it about enough the rest of the episode!!!!!- and once they lock them in its to slowly kill them by starvation or lack of oxygen- and the huge spider mum gets shot, after we are suddenly expected to feel sorry for her as she only wants outside for more air.
But bad American shoots her because of unsubtle political commentary and guns are bad- I think that's every episode now that's come up!
And how shit a cop is Yas why didn't she arrest the bad guy or at least tell him she was police when he drew a clearly illegal gun in the UK? Why didn't she report him for it afterwards and have him arrested? How did he get it through customs?

Ok I'm going to talk about two good things- as there were only two good things in this- the scene where bad American Trump mockery bodyguard gets killed and taken, that was good old fashioned creepy b-movie style Who, and the scenes with Grahame which at least had some genuine emotion to them.

That's it, the rest was pretty damn bad. What plot there is is again given mainly as exposition, there is very little in the way of finding stuff out by doing and a lot more of finding out by standing about in a room discussing it.

I think I have to mention the politics of this one as they are so central- the bad guy is a Trump clone- he is a famous American business man who is planning to run for President, he has a global chain of hotels and other business interests, he is callous, shitty and selfish and he gets to belittle the Doctor and the UK for not doing what a 'civilised nation' would and take up a gun against the spiders, and then gets to prove the evil of guns by shooting mummy spider.

But for me it falls totally flat- the Trump comparisons are not subtly made and lack any sort of real humour or wit that would make them feel at least like satire. He isn't really the bad guy either, just unpleasant, he doesn't do anything to hinder the Doctor of the companions other than be unpleasant to everyone,and he doesn't get any sort of pay off or comeuppance for his actions either. He just seems to be there to be a character they can use to punch Trump with. Blatantly. And on its own that's not enough.

They try to give Yas some sort of character, but do so by trying to Rose her, by which I mean give her a family- but there is no real sense of connection between them, we dont learn anything new at all about Yas through her interactions with them and she ditches them first chance she gets.

Which is another thing, that ending. They all choose to ask to travel with the Doctor for the usual reasons- its amazing, wonders of the universe ect- except they haven't seen any wonders, its been shit and misery all along- their Nan got killed, they got stuck on a desolate planet of stuff trying to kill them, were racially abused and threatened and giant spiders tried to kill them- what's actually happened to them doesn't fit at all with the reasons they give for travelling with the Doctor. It hasn't been fun at all!
And Yaz, the character most in need of reasons and personality, has the worst reason- the Doctor points out she wanted to get home, Yaz says family are the most important thing to her, but they really annoy her too sometimes, so she's buggering off and leaving them then to be with the Doctor? What about her job and career in the police? Is she assuming they are coming right back just because its a time machine? Because the set up of the scene and the Doctors words make it seem more like making a choice between staying or going. Its just really weak for Yaz. And was it just me or was there a hint that Yas might have a crush on the Doctor? Yas mother did ask if the Doctor was Yas' girlfriend. God I hope not!

I also thought this was Jodies weakest performance as the Doctor, failing to dominate her scenes. And its not helped by the fact that like everything else being exposition we don't get to see her Doctor act like she is automatically in charge of any situation, the characters have to actually verbally tell us she is, presumably as based on the performance alone we might not believe it. Having no real foe doesn't help here.

The final twist, if I can even call it that- that mommy spider was more scared of them, just wanting out the hotel was ham-fisted and felt shoehorned in to elicit some sort of sudden sympathy so bad American could immediately shoot it and we could all boo him- this was handled much better in Vincent and the Doctor with 11.

The morality of the Doctors actions is also highly questionable, not in a dramatic way just a stupid one- she wont let the Trump-alike shoot the spiders, even as a mercy kill because guns are bad, but she is happy to lock them in a vault to slowly die. I had thought the solution at the very end would be for the Doctor to take the spiders to a planet that was rich in oxygen where they could live, that would be Doctory, giving a speech about how they are living creatures and deserve life so they dont get shot, then slowly starving them all to death instead doesn't really work as a moral.

Also what about the ones already in the town?- there's one in Grahame's house, one in Yas neighbours and the Doctor says  they had spread out hunting from the hotel, and from the web map thing they drew there seemed to be a lot of them out there. Are they still out there? Did they just leave them? Did the script forget they were in this? What happened?

So no plot really, and what there was riddled with handy coincidences- bad American owned hotel and had the dumping company, the dumping company happened to also dispose of genetic waste, the girl who worked at the spider lab had a workmate who happened to live next door to Yas's family, and happened to be trying to call on her just as the Doctor and co were there and just happened to be the neighbour the postman had left Yas family's parcel with which the Doctor just happened to randomly notice just in time to go out and meet the spider lab woman, and bad American happened to hire Yas mum to run his hotel, and out of all of Sheffield the two places giant spiders made themselves obvious was next door to Yas family and in Grahame's house- even though we are told they'd only been gone half an hour since the end of ep 1. So was it already there?

Most of the plot is given via exposition- the science girl who gives all the backstory on the spiders, the lab, the manner in which there disposed of, bad American who gives the other half backstory on the hotel, the landfill, the mine and owning the dumping company too and the Doctor who tells us what it all means.
There is no real villain again for the Doctor to get her teeth into, and the two we have- spiders, aren't really villains, we are meant to think of them as victims of humanities folly and greed, and then there is Trump alike, who doesn't have an arc, presents no threat at no point and is just there to show what a dick Trump is and beuase actually making him Trump would probably give them legal issues, but he may as well be its the only purpose he serves is to be Trump.

Giving this one 4 out of 10 and the 4 are for the bodyguard death scene and the scenes with Grahame. Everything else was worse than terrible this week.

additional- thing that's beginning to really annoy and spark the crabbit- why cant 13 use her sonic without making that ridiculous open-legged, arm fully extended poster pose every single time, can't she just wave it about it a bit and save the big poses for something more dramatic than opening a door! Mad }}

{{My little brother messaged me after watching tonights epiosde with a very good question I couldn't answer-

 I' don't understand this doctor, like what are her traits?'

Good question- she doesn't like guns and can be vocable about it, like 10, she makes quirky or humorous references a lot to off-screen historical figures she as met, like 11 and 12, she apologies to people and things a lot, saying sorry a lot, like 10 did, but other than being female I cant really think of much to distinguish her Doctors personality, its more a mishmash of NuWHo Doctors without much of its own brought to the table (even the custard cream thing seems like a rehash of 11's love for jammy dodgers) . Apart from maybe overly cheerful and optimistic I dont know what her traits are.

Any takers on trying to define 13's personality and what makes her stand out from the other NuWho Doctors? }}

{{Well I'm squarely blaming Chibbers Blue Nod sure others can find a way to blame Moffat for it!  Very Happy But Chibnal wrote this one too, and next weeks (  Mad ) and it has all the same issues as previous episodes this series- a paper thin plot, no villain, no substance, nothing meaty for the Doctor to do, and thinly drawn characters and story given through exposition.

I mean take this weeks poor effort- giant spiders- how did they get giant?- toxic waste caused mutations. Really? That ancient chestnut of a scifi idea? This is Doctor Who, why is it so boring and unimaginative? Why arent they psychic spiders from Metabilis III? Why aren't they part of a crazy master-plan by the Rani to gain immortality gone wrong? Or part of a intergalactic spider empire? Why haven't they fallen through a wormhole from prehistory when insects really were much bigger? Anything other than mutated by toxic bloody waste! - this isn't a Simson episode with a three-eyed fish (already more inventive than Chibbers Who!) Mad

And the politics is painful on the nose and noxiously shoved in your face front and centre- bad enough we get the Trump caricature but they also get corporate and capitalist greed in there, an environmental message about human waste and dumping and some more capitalisms bashing, anti-guns rhetoric, and if thats not all enough they even get a bloody coal mine in there- ooh wasn't Thacher evil! Its incredible, the hotel is literally just layers of right on anger!

Who can occasionally be bad, it can be campy, it can be silly- but up till now it was never so lacking in imagination or so boring in its ideas or so clumsy in its politics!!!  Evil or Very Mad }}

{{Chibbers made a big deal that we would not have any returning villains or bad guys- all new monsters we were promised, and what have we got so far? Lets see-

1. Predator knock off that hunts people to prove his worth and takes a tooth from the corpse as a trophy that he then sticks in his face. Gives his entire backstory and reason for existing in one scene of blurted out exposition.

2. Psychic killer bandages that can only come out at night (for reasons never explained) no personality obviously, they are bandages, but they do have a backstory, its blurted out in a scene of exposition by the Doctor. And they do have a cryptic plot message to deliver before being blown up and never mentioned or a threat again.

3. A racist. That's all I've got, that's all we get. He is racist. What little backstory he has, guess what? Yup its blurted out in a scene of exposition. Anyone noticing a shitty pattern here?

4. Giant mutant spiders. But they arent really bad, just the victims of evil humans and their damage to the environment and science experiments (heaven forbid the Doctor promote science in a good light again!!) and trump guy isn't really bad, just a dick head, so um no villain- but so as you dont miss it, the plot, or what passes for it, is explained in not one, not two, but three glorious scenes of exposition! The science lady tells us all about her experiments, the spiders, and how they dispose of stuff, the Trump guy tells about the hotel, the landfill, the mine and that he owns the dumping company, and the Doctor tells us how all the dots neatly join together to equal giant mutant spiders. Oh good.

Anyone else hankering for a good Dalek, Cyberman or even a Sontaran story? (they are rich for re-imagining as evil bastards again experimenting on species to find their breaking points so as to make better war against them).}}

All New Who - Page 14 Empty Re: All New Who

Post by Pettytyrant101 on Mon Oct 29, 2018 7:53 pm

{{Well here we are again, this weeks-

Things That didn't Make Any Sense!

(note Ive probably missed lots, this is still on the first watch, I haven't managed to bring myself to watch this one again yet!)
Spoiler:

1. the rubbish Yas's Dad has collected- He says its part of some conspiracy, its a problem, and he had already complained to Yas and got her to report it. Why does he have it in their flat? In their kitchen? Its rubbish from a landfill, why even if you did think it was suspicious, would you keep it in your kitchen, just lying on the floor? It's not like we are shown her family live in squalor, they don't, its a nice clean house otherwise.
Second that landfill is under the hotel which itself in the middle of a sizeable area of empty estate- was her dad in the secret mine with the landfill in it under the hotel? Are we think that's where he got the rubbish from? Wouldn't he say something about that?! How would we get in, the woman that works for Trump guy had to go through a security door to access the mine. And if he wasnt then where the hell did he get the landfill rubbish from? What was the conspiracy he thought was going on? What was the point of any of that?!!!

2. Still on the rubbish- we are told about its smell, apparently they can smell it at the flats- so why isn't the hotel stinking? Its built on top of it? Why when they are standing right on the edge of the landfill, in the enclosed mine supposedly full of toxic gases does it not effect anyone more than if they'd smelled a mildly unpleasant fart? And this is not the first time. It was the same on planet desolation, its like Chibnal thinks he is writing Big Finish and he just has to tell you the air is toxic without showing it, no one acts like it is, the script never takes it into account or has it have any effect on anyone, but it is toxic trust us because the script said it was.

3. We are told the spider went to the flat next to Yas family flat because she had pheromones on her from work that attracted the spider. Why was one in Grahame's house then? Are we to think its pure coincidence and that one moved in during the half hour that we are told is all that has passed between episode one and them arriving back now? Why his house out of every house in Sheffield? We are never told, and the spider is presumably still living there at episodes end!

4. We are told the science lab were conducting experiments on spiders to essentially make them immortal, as spiders continue to grow as long as they live, we get huge spiders.
But the ones that get huge are the ones thrown out, and they get thrown out because they died in the experiments. But apparently at least one wasn't actually dead.
If your experiment is to make something live forever, then you'd think they'd be pretty sure in checking they are actually dead before throwing them out- establishment of absolute definite death would in fact be rather crucial to the experiments. And you'd think they would dissect them afterwards to find out what went wrong before disposing of them.

5. We are told the toxic waste fermenting out the landfill has mutated the not quite dead experiment left overs- but how? In what way? We have already been told they were genetically mucked about with to live forever and so grow bigger, and that's what we see. So what part is the landfill actually playing in it? Everyone says they were mutated by the waste, but we dont actually see any proof of this, and the plot doesn't require it, as an explanation has already been given for their size. So was the entire point of the landfill being there just so they could say -'oh dumping waste in a landfill in a mine closed by the Tories is bad!'?

6. How is suffocating a spider to death more humane than shooting it and killing it instantly? How is locking a whole load of various sized spiders in a vault, until they either a) eat each other until only one survives before it eventually dies too b) die of asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen for that many big spiders. c) die of starvation- how is that better than shooting them and killing them instantly?
More importantly she is the Doctor- she gives a big speech about how they are living breathing things with a right to life- she has a TARDIS- why isn't she transporting them somewhere safe they can survive? Why is she killing them all in far worse ways than the supposed bad guy wants to?!! What is the moral message supposed to be here?

7. Why doesn't the Doctor think of using her SONIC screwdriver when she needs to make a vibration to lure the spiders? The Doctor has done similar lots of times. Is it because she's a woman now and they didn't want her holding a vibrating sonic?

8. What about all the other giant spiders roaming Sheffield? Presumably cocooning and eating more people? Why doesn't the Doctor seem to care or give a thought for them? For that matter why isn't there mass panic- giant spiders are roaming a prominent city in the north of England and killing people. Why is none of it ever mentioned once its served the plot purpose of pointing everyone to the hotel? Presumably the Doctor just left all the spiders behind wandering Sheffiled, alive and well to eat more innocent people!

9. What was the actual point of the Trump like character? He has no functioning part in the plot, he doesn't do anything to either help or hinder the Doctor and co, there is no pay off or showdown or big confrontation scene with him by episodes end, he quite literally shoots the spider and walks away- presumably to complete the Trump analogy that Trump can do anything and just get away with it. But as a plot device its anti-climatic and renders his entire role in the episode pointless and without a function to perform.
Nothing he does- give exposition about the landfill and mine, shoot the spider, could not also have been done by any extra character- a workman they rescue trapped in the hotel, just the hotels owner whose you know, normal bad guy who wants to protect his hotels reputation or something, not a Trump parody. In fact other than being a Trump parody he has absolutely no function whatsoever in events that could not have been easily replicated without him.
The only act he does is shoot the big spider- but it's hard to see that as the bad choice when apparently the Doctor's choice was to let it asphyxiate to death- "You didn't have to do that. It was dying anyway." Yeah, slowly and painfully whilst desperately scratching at the doors and walls to get out. Yes, someone did have to do that if you, the Doctor, weren't going to bother your arse coming up with a way to save the spider you now expect us to feel sorry for!!

I'm getting a crabbit headache now! Mad Really what was the point of Yas's famiy being in this? So we could she she wasn't that bothered about any of them? The episode opens making a big deal of meeting them, then dumps them almost immediately to sit and wait, shoves them back in at the end for  minute or two and Yas ditches them- so what was the point? If her mum had just been another character it wouldn't have made any real difference to the interaction between Yas and her, it has no effect on the plot or on Yas's character either. Her mums just sort of there by the convenience of pot device. Yas ends the episode exactly where we started with her and we dont learn anything new. And seriously, the rubbish? What was it about? Why was it there? What was the point?!!
Why doesn't any of it make sense, again?!!!  Arghhhh! My head!!! Evil or Very Mad  I need buckie!!! Twisted Evil drunken drunken drunken }}}

{{Az- yup ton of great villains and monsters from classic and NuWho, and I'm not at all adverse to people creating new ones- that's how we got the Weeping Angels and the Silence and Vashta Nerada, and the peg-dolls and lots of others- but what we've got so far with 13 doesn't come close to any of those let alone the classic villains like the Master/Missy or Cybermen or Daleks. And I dont see why having new ones should exclude having some classic ones too- its worked for every other series of Who since series 2 of classic when the Daleks returned for the first of many, many times!  }}

Not going very well is it. There's a saying "if it aint broke why mend it". I know things can get tired or a bit jaded but, has anyone ever said "oh no not Daleks again !" ? I don't think so. IF, & its a bloody big if, IF I tune in this weekend & its still a shower of shit IL be gutted. Gutted because the Beeb has pushed a long loved show thru the ringer & squeezed out everything that made this the most durable magical sci-fi prog that's out stripped & out lived many many other sci-fi progs. You cant say "Great Britain" without attaching Dr Who to it, Its so dam iconic & known the world over. Now ? if it goes on like this don't fool yourself, this will go down in the history books ( read by little Venusian's ) as a right royal cock up & for what ? IL say it. So woman can beat their chests & say we can be Dr Who just as good as any man. No, you fecking cant. You cant have "Jane" Bond, "Ethel" Hunt, "Simone" Templer, "Valerie" helsing, Whats next ? "Mums" Army ?

Nah, Jodi's doing fine. If the writing allows, she'll be a brilliant. That's a big if, though.

{{I agree its not because the Doctor is a woman, its because the Doctor is being badly written in bland badly written stories with bland badly written character around her facing bland badly written villains.
13 is starting to come over like a hyperactive puppy about to wet itself in excitement at everything, but a large part of that is because the stories and scripts haven't given her Doctor anything else but that to do, there is no counter side to it, no darker side, no tragic side beyond her big puppy eye routine at being lonely, and no good villains for her to get morally outraged or disgusted by. And the plots she has been involved in haven't allowed her Doctor to shine in the brilliance stakes because they are all so simple.
Performance wise I still dont get a sense of her commanding the room, of focusing attention on herself the way the Doctor normally has, nor do I get a sense, as I did say with Matt Smiths performance, of an old soul in a young body- she just seems young, and at times, by the Doctors normal standards, a bit slow on the uptake (though that is the writing again not the performance, though sometimes the face she pulls when someone is explaining stuff to her is a bit gormless looking)- like not thinking of using her own sonic to make a noise with.}}

All New Who - Page 14 Empty Re: All New Who

Post by Forest Shepherd on Tue Oct 30, 2018 6:40 am

Breaking news! Extry-extry read all about it!
Spoiler:
This episode sucked.

My thoughts:
It really did.

From the stupid Trump-but-in-the-same-universe-as-Trump character to the stupid spiders to the bad writing to the dumb plot.

I hate that we're subjected to the grandmother coming back through Grahame's memories. I had enough of that shit in the final season of Sherlock. I BARELY KNOW THIS CHARACTER AND I DON'T CARE ABOUT THEM. What was her defining trait? Being all-around great and good at dying pointlessly, absolutely pointlessly. Her "sacrifice" was for no-one, and did nothing. The eel-blob had already interrupted the power or whatever, and it wasn't doing anything anymore.

I fucking hate that they put Trump in Doctor Who. Obama was bad enough, but at least that was in a "oh haha, RTD thinks Obama is a saint, how endearingly naive" sort of way. Doing this though is such a clichéd step for the show. It's all turned into a back-patting routine that I find worn-out and uninspired. It's not clever, or interesting, or exciting. It's predictable. Nothing about the businessman surprised or interested me. "Scheduled bathroom breaks"? What are they saying with that?
The only redeeming thing about this character is that the actor is charismatic. But I can't get over my crabbit that the show is inserting such stupid bait into such an uninteresting story.

How are plastic jugs that have been dropped down a coal mine showing up all over the place??? The spiders are carrying the garbage with them or something? What? The dad is accidentally poisoning his family as well then, like an idiot. Who brings toxic garbage into their apartment?

There was all sorts of crap like that that gets introduced and then never mentioned again. The cell-phone being important, Kevin being... important somehow, and the whistle-blowing confession made by the niece's wife, to name a few. We're 2 for 4 for needlessly (as in, does nothing to advance the plot forward) name-dropping lesbian marriages this season so far. I guess it is a really convenient way to tell which characters are on the good side within 30 seconds of meeting them though, without the use of theme music too. How useful.

The plot is driven mostly by coincidence.

1. Yaz's mom works for Trump-not-trump
2. Yaz's mom decided to head into work unexpectedly today.
3. This is the same day that the Doctor and gang left, and return.
4. Yaz's dad collects garbage that he finds around the city.
5. Yaz's neighbour-but-one works for the lab Peter Parker visited.
6. Yaz's neighbours' co-worker just happens to be standing outside her coworker's door when the Doctor goes to Yaz's house, and is still there when she comes back out again.
7. Yaz's house has had a package delivered to said neighbour.
8. One of the spiders from the coal-mine landfill just happens to find the house of someone who works in the lab responsible for said spider.
etc.

It feels contrived. It doesn't unfold naturally like a good story will, it clunks from one coincidence to another, characters arriving just in time, other characters just happening to be in the right spot; and I'm left wondering why it's all going so wrong.

The scene in which loud music saves the day is very Star Trek 3 (the recent film I mean), and injects just a little bit of fun into the proceedings, but it is not enough to save the episode, not by several miles.

I agree with Petty that I do not have a good feel for who this Doctor is. They are doing piss-all to develop her. I suppose I should be grateful that we don't have lizard-lady telling us how the Doctor burns like a million galaxies or some other meaningless nonsense, but I can't be satisfied with this.

Great points Petty about Yas' inconsistencies towards her family, and how the companions all want to go exploring with the Doctor despite going with the Doctor being an absolute shit-show so far. The over-riding theme with this Doctor is that she can't steer her T.A.R.D.I.S.! She's barely able to land it in the right spot until this episode! So she can't even offer them some amazing sights, just the privilege of helping to pull her random-destination-lever.

And, of course, how incredibly boring the monsters were this week. No villain, and boring-ass monsters.

And the Doctor's apparent delight in spider-cruelty!

Wow, this episode keeps getting worse.

I cant stand the thought of the Doctor being casually cruel and thoughtless to animals its just not right. The Doctor saves creatures, that's what he does and has always done. He even saved a Slitheen ffs.

{{Its worse than that Figg precisely because she isn't thoughtless about it- this is what she says about the spiders when she is giving one of her anti-gun speeches in this episode-

'Whatever happened, those are living, breathing organisms out there and we treat them with dignity.'

Spoiler:

And then she locks them all stuffed in a room together to suffocate, starve, cannibalise one another and inevitably die a horrible slow, painful death. That's our 13th Doctor!

It's hardly top shelf writing.

But before you all go overboard with rage and hate, please tell me how long it took before 12 was fully in place as The Doctor?

We had a full episode of Clara crying "he's oooold, he's oooold!" And 12 either bullied a robot into suicide or threw it off a plane (?). And all plot holes and loose ends were excused by being red herrings and clearly placed there for a reason.

Which Doctor has not skipped about and being excited, oooing and awwwing at this and that? She even says she's still finding out who she us, but no, can't give her the slack we gave 13 can we?
