It's like, sometimes the CC gets tons of posts at a time as various stories are being updated, and other times no one posts anything there for a week or more at a time because nothing is being updated.

is that a problem? it is like that for all the forum. sometimes the serious forum is quite for weeks, not to mention site-issues and the silmarillion section.

Aside from The Silmarillion (which I mentioned above) the rest of the forum is relatively more consistent in its level of posting activity than the CC.

"Also, if we take the Archive Forum down and promote the Creative Corner to a full forum, it will create a significant imbalance in the number of forums in the Middle-earth and Other Topics categories." - Eldo

I think this is a good point. While we have in many ways become a general forum (in lack of better descriptions) as much as a Tolkien forum, it is after all the Tolkien and more specifically the Hobbit we attract new members with, and if potential new members feel this forum isn't "Tolkien" enough, they might move on to other forums.

As to the archive forum, if it's a lot of work to bring it up again and keep it, I'd say it's your call - I wouldn't know how to do it, so I don't feel I can demand that you keep it. I would hate to lose it all, though, I used to look through some of our older threads when it the link to them still worked, and we had some good threads going there, and a lot of fun stuff. But like I said, I'd leave it up to you to decide, as you're probably the one who'll have to do something about it.

Our history would be forgotten completetly - with never the chance for a nostalgic visit. The Old Forum is like our First Age. Yeah -- no one goes there much - but now and then... Sad

As to the Creative Corner thing. Does it really matter if we don't use it all the time. It'll be in a handy spot when the urge is upon us at least. And when it's going strong, it'll be noticed more readily. I don't know if I'm right or not but I feel that whenever Creative Corner is going strong, so is the rest of the forum, which means Creative Corner gets buried quickly with each new post. Shrugging

What Orwell said. I shouldn't ruin it by writing superfluous agreement, but...

Not sure why posting imbalance should be a problem, I mean theoretically we should only be posting in Site Issues if we actually have a site issue. One would think that would be done away with by the posting imbalance argument.

So my view is split out the Creative Corner and leave everything else be. It solves a problem, why over think it and create meaningless angst?

I haven't discussed it much in public, but a lot of thought has gone into the way the forum is laid out. If you visit other Tolkien forums, especially ones that were started back in the early years of the 2000s when the fandom was huge, many of them have way too many forums and it dilutes the activity of the forum. Also, having lots of forums that don't have much activity in them doesn't look good to visitors. The Site Issues forum is an exception because it one that exists to fulfill certain administrative purposes rather than day-to-day discussion, which is why it's tucked down at the very bottom of the page. Although in actuality there are a fair few discussions that take place in here.

So my view is split out the Creative Corner and leave everything else be.  It solves a problem, why over think it and create meaningless angst?

Well the reason this is being discussed in the first place is that it was suggested by someone and then supported by various other members, so this is maybe not the best thread to diss forum democracy in. Razz

Anyway, because this is clearly a popular proposal I'll split out the Creative Corner forum shortly. Wink On a related topic though, what do people think about the idea of getting rid of the Archive Forum as its own separate entity and just making the link to the archive a sticky here in the Site Issues forum? Having thought about this more over the past day, I don't really think the Archive needs to have the position of prominence it once did.

I agree - I would hate to lose the archive link, but if you sticky it in Site Issues that seems perfectly good to me and its place on the main forum can be taken by Creative Corner.

Sticky for the archive sounds like a good idea Nod

makes sense, and actually the archive forum never really belonged up with the Tolkien stuff. I think having fewer categories under Tolkien affords it more prominence, not less; especially since it's at the top of the page.

I do see how the lack of symmetry between top and bottom is a bit jarring, but that's just because we've become accustomed to the balance. maybe if the Tolkien titles were bolded or something it may feel more balanced, but mainly we just have to get used to it and will feel right.
